LED Grow Lights
Do LED Grow Lights Work for
Growing Plants Indoors?
|
LED grow lights are very new to the horticulture arena. Many
manufacturers are still playing with different types of LED light
configurations to see what types of LED lights are able to rival the
output and yield of the currently popular HID lights. Although the jury is still out, it now look like the latest
generation is now rivaling, and could potentially surpass HID
lights in yield, and doing so more efficiently. LED grow lights show much promise because of their energy efficient
nature. Photosynthesis requires very specific areas of the light
spectrum. Traditional grow lights target a very broad area of the
light spectrum, whereas LED lights can be designed only to target
the sections of the light spectrum required for photosynthesis. The
result is no wasted energy! |

First generation LED grow lights used low power LED that didn’t
quite target the right light spectrums. As a result, although these
lights did grow plants, the growth was not very impressive.
Newer generation lights use higher wattage LEDs, and a more
researched configuration, and the results are showing fantastic
grows and yields rivalling HID. High quality LED grow lights are going to start at around $200, with
a more expensive setup that can rival HID lights costing $500 or
even several thousand. Indoor gardeners are urged to stay away from
the cheaper first generation LED grow lights, as they may be
disappointed with the results. |
